GIK – Prevention of violence in childhood

The measure “Early Starter” was implemented in the context of “Berlin’s Action Plan against Youth Violence” 2008 in the Free and Hanseatic City of Berlin. The target group for the measure are children in day-care centres and schools, as well as their families. The program includes qualification of well-trained specialists for violence prevention, the utilisation of diagnostics, as well as universal and indicated preventive measures against violence. The project focuses on identifying conspicuously aggressive children which are, in the sense of the “Early Starter” concept, in danger of consolidating their behaviour. The measure was scientifically monitored from April 2009 until June 2010

STATIONARY “BABYLOTSE”: Prevention in maternity hospitals

In 2006 the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth, together with the national program “Early Support for Parents and Children and Social Early Warning Systems”, appealed for intensified prevention of child abuse and neglect as well as the promotion of children’s health and development. From August 2008 until August 2010 the stationary social early warning system “Babylotse Berlin” was tested in Berlin. Social pedagogues working in the Catholic Marien-Hospital Berlinacted as pilots for families with psycho-social stress. Burdened families were registered systematically using screening-forms. Need for help was determined together with the family and an accompanying integration into the social and health system of help and support was enabled.

PAEDIATRIC CHECK-UPS: Evaluation of the Invitation and Intermal Reporting for Children’s Early Detection Paediatric Check-ups in Berlin

The model project for controlled participation in children’s early detection paediatric check-ups U6 (10th to 12th month of life) and U7 (21st to 24th month of life) implemented in Berlinand developed on the basis of the “law for re-structuring and optimizing preventive health care in pre-school age” dated 15 May 2009 was evaluated in the context of the study. The goal of the Central Invitation and Internal Reporting is to increase utilisation of early detection paediatric check-ups (“U-examinations”) offered free of charge and to thereby reach socially disadvantaged families in particular who, so far, benefit too little from services of general health care.

“SCHATZSUCHE” – Mental health in day-care centres

The project by the Association for Health Promotion Berlin(HAG) aims at facilitating childrens’ mental health in day-care centres within Berlin’s social problem areas. Sustainable health facilitation is to be enabled by providing further training for educators and parents, as well as by linking day-care centres with existing local health care and support establishments. The quality of further trainings as well as acceptance and contentment of the target groups is assessed between July 2011 and December 2012 in the context of a formative evaluation.

BMBF-Reasearch Association “KNP – Cooperation for Sustainable Prevention Research”

This project was promoted by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) from 2009 to 2013 and aims at the connection and practical implementation of overall 60 projects with an emphasis on prevention research. By devising political recommendations of action and developing methods of prevention research, sustainable structural improvements are being supported. One of the established working groups, “AG-Methods” at the German Society for Social Medicine and Prevention (DGSMP), works especially on methods that are suitable for the specific target groups and enable extended statistical evaluation procedures. The entire project was coordinated in cooperation with the Medical School of Hannover (MHH) and the Federal Centre for Health Education (BZgA).

AMBULATORY “BABYLOTSE” – Prevention in gynaecological practices

The five-year project of the foundation “SeeYou” started in January 2012 with the mission of implementing a social early warning system in an ambulatory setting. Psychosocially strained pregnant women or families are identified using a risk screening in gynaecological practices. After a first talk the “Babylotsen” (“Baby Pilots”) relay families with need for support to services of Early Support in Berlin. The evaluation includes the quality, acceptance and effectiveness of these complex interventions, including through surveying all people involved, pre-post-comparison of the women’s self-efficacy at birth and after the child’s first birthday within the control-group design.

BMBF-Research Association “CANSAS” – Child Abuse and Neglect as a cause and consequence of Substance Abuse – understanding risks and improving ServicesProject 3.A Risk Assessment of Caregivers with Substance Addiction: The Development of an Evidence-based Instrument

Caregivers’ addiction problems are one of the most significant risk factors for violence against and neglect of children. Thus, there is an urgent need to develop specific instruments that assess the risk of violence with caregivers who suffer from substance abuse in routine health care. In sub-project 3.A of the BMBF-sponsored research association “CANSAS – Childhood Abuse and Neglect as a cause and consequence of Substance Abuse” (duration: 05/2013 until 05/2015), relevant risk factors and instruments for risk assessment utilised worldwide are identified using a meta-analysis of the association between parents’ substance abuse and violence against children. Additionally, the procedures of counsellors regarding clients with minor children are assessed in a nationwide, representative survey of ambulatory addiction treatment centres. The results of the survey are discussed in a web-based network area of counsellors from psychological counselling offices. Based on the results from the expert network, the nationwide survey and the meta-analysis, a screening instrument for child welfare endangerment for ambulatory addiction treatment centres will be developed, and its application in the field will be tested in cooperation with outpatient institutions of Berlin’s addiction support system.

KANU-Berlin: Prevention services for children of mentally ill parents

In the treatment of mentally ill parents their children are often disregarded despite increased psychosocial stress. In order to reduce the children’s stress, strengthen their resources and thus prevent possible behavioural problems, the prevention project KANU-Berlinis implemented in adult inpatient clinics and evaluated with regard to its acceptance and effectiveness. KANU-Berlinis sponsored by the Stifterverband der Deutschen Wissenschaft and conducted in the context of the junior research group “Preventive Strategies for Promoting Mental Health of Children and Adolescents”. It is based on the prevention project KANU, which has already been implemented successfully in regional mental health services in the greater Bielefeld area.
